By Jo Anderson. Last Updated 10th November 2023. This guide will provide information about finger injury compensation amounts. We look at the different heads of loss that could be awarded for a successful personal injury claim, and how these are calculated.
Additionally, this guide sets out the eligibility criteria you must meet to make a personal injury claim. There are lots of different day-to-day situations in which you could suffer an injury, including at work, while in a public place, or on the roads. You are owed a duty of care in each of these situations. Should a breach in this duty occur and you injured your fingers as result, you could be entitled to compensation.
If you are eligible to make a claim, you may like to instruct a solicitor to work on your case. We conclude this guide with a look at the benefits of having the support of a No Win No Fee solicitor.

Finger Injury Compensation Payouts
There are lots of situations that might lead to injured fingers. As we have mentioned, not all of these would automatically lead to a claim, however. All successful claims result in general damages. This covers your injuries and the suffering and pain they cause.
We have created a table using the Judicial College Guidelines (JCG), which is a publication that solicitors can use to help them get an idea of the compensation appropriate for certain injuries. The figures below are guidelines only, and relate to general damages.
Compensation Table
Type of injury | Amounts awarded | Notes |
---|---|---|
Amputation of Index and Middle and/or Ring Fingers (d) | £61,910 to £90,750 | Total loss |
Fracture/s of fingers deemed severe (f) | Up to £36,740 | This could result in partial amputations and loss of use |
Amputation of terminal phalanges of middle and index fingers (q) | In the region of £24,990 | Amount awarded depends on how much loss of use is involved |
Amputation of little and ring fingers (p) | In the region of £21,810 | – |
Total or Partial loss of index finger (i) | £12,170 to £18,740 | Both total and partial losses would come under this bracket. |
Middle or ring fingers (k) | £10,320 to £16,340 | Damage is deemed severe |
Fracture of index finger (j) | £9,110 to £12,240 | Amount awarded depends on how much loss of grip is involved |

We should reiterate that these guidelines are only illustrative. If you would like some further insight into payouts for finger injuries, we’d be happy to assist you.
The Criteria For Finger Injury Claims
Now that we have shared some examples of potential finger injury compensation amounts for UK claims, we will explain the eligibility criteria that you must meet in order to make a personal injury claim.
The eligibility criteria that all finger injury claims must meet are as follows:
- Someone else must have owed you a duty of care.
- They then breached this duty.
- Due to the breach, you suffered your finger injury.
You are owed a duty of care by various types of people. Some examples include:
- Your employer – Every employer in the UK owes their employees a duty of care under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 (HASAWA). They must take reasonably practical steps to prevent employees from coming to harm due to the work premises or the work they undertake.
- Occupiers of public places – Those in control of public spaces owe a duty of care under the Occupiers’ Liability Act 1957. Per this legislation, they must take steps to ensure the reasonable safety of those visiting that space.
- Road users – Every road user owes a duty of care to others on the road. They must take care not to use the roads in a manner that could cause harm to themselves or other users. They must also follow the regulations found within the Road Traffic Act 1988 and the rules and guidance in the Highway Code.
If any relevant third party breaches the duty of care they owe you, and this causes your finger to be injured, you could be eligible to make a personal injury claim.
If you’re unsure whether you’ll be eligible or have questions about finger injury compensation amounts, please contact an advisor.
Examples Of Finger Injuries
Although there are many forms of finger injuries you may sustain, whether in the workplace or in a public place, there are some which are more commonly reported than others which are detailed below:
- Thumb injuries – broken thumbs are extremely commonplace in the workplace, with many workers not realising the extent of the damage straight away. As such, it’s essential to seek medical attention if any excessive bruising and swelling occurs
- Broken fingers – another very commonly reported finger injury, and again many workers are not aware of the extent of damage they sustained, which is why medical attention should always be sought as soon as possible
- Dislocations – many workers in the manufacturing industries sustain dislocated fingers because of the type of work they do
- Fractures – along with broken fingers, fractures are also commonplace, which typically happen through a slip, trip and fall accident
- Amputations – many workers lose a finger which negatively impacts how they carry out mundane daily tasks
How Long Do I Have To Claim Compensation For The Loss Of A Finger In The UK?
According to the law, you should generally begin a claim for compensation for the loss of a finger in the UK within 3 years of the accident occurring. However, we would advise you to contact us as soon as you can.
When claiming finger injury compensation amounts in the UK, as with any type of personal injury claim, it is important that you do so within the limitation period. The time limit to start a claim is set out in the Limitation Act 1980. However, you may also start a claim three years from the date you established that your injury was caused by an act of negligence.
There are exceptions to the limitation period when claiming hand injury compensation amounts in the UK in certain circumstances. For example, if your hand injury was significant and left you incapacitated for a long period after your accident, you may have not been able to claim. If this was the case, you would have up to three years after the date you recovered to start your claim.
You can call our advisors at any time using the number featured in the banner above. They can explain further exceptions to the time limit and let you know if you could still make a claim. Otherwise, read on to find out how you could get compensation for hand injuries, including if your fingers were caught in a door.
